Step 2. Setup

In this step, you both put cards into play face-up and leave them there. This is what players can do during Setup in any order:

1. Put characters in play. (Limit 2 characters per player per turn)
2. Attach items to characters. (Limit 1 item on a character).
3. Put location cards in play.

The active player (the villian) sets up first.

1. Put Sesshomaru, Aristocratic Assassin in play face-up. To play a card, you must first pay its deck cost shown in the icon you see here. You now discard the top 3 cards of your deck and play Sesshomaru in front of you.
2. Play Jaken face-up. First, discard 2 cards to pay the cost for Jaken. You have already played 2 characters this turn, so you can't play any more.
3. Play Medic Kit underneath Jaken face-up. Since Medic Kit has a cost of 0, you don't discard any cards to pay for it.
4. Play Yura's Sword face-up underneath Sesshomaru. Yura's Sword also has a deck cost of 0.
5. Put the location Resting Place into play. It's deck cost is 0. You are now done with Setup. Now it's the hero's turn.

The Villian's layout should look like this:

The opposing player (the hero) now sets up.

1. Play Kaede, Village Priestess face-up and pay her deck cost of 2.
2. Play Inuyasha, Kagome's Protector, paying the deck cost of 3. You cannot play any more cards during Setup. Why? Two reasons: 1.) because two of the other cards in hand are events which are played only during Battle, and 2.) because the other card, Inuyasha, is a Unique character. "Unique" means the controller of the card can only have one copy of it in play at a time. Look for the word "Unique" in the trait box.

The Hero's layout should look like this:

On to battle!
